Kentuckiana Shetland Sheepdog Club

Speciality Show

For more than 25 years, KSSC has sponsored two days of Sheltie Speciality conformation events concurrent with the Kentuckiana All-Breed Cluster of Dog Shows. The Kentuckiana Cluster, one of the largest dog shows in the nation, is sponsored by The Louisville Kennel Club, The Mid-Kentucky Kennel Club, The Evansville Kennel Club, and The Greater-Louisville Training Club. Held each year in March, the event runs Thursday – Sunday at the Kentucky Exposition Center.

Show dates for 2020 are March 12-15.  The KSSC sponsored Speciality Shows are on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 17.  Please stop by!

The members of Kentuckiana Shetland Sheepdog Club are amazing the way they pull together such a successful two day specialty Sheltie show which draws some of the top Sheltie exhibitors in the Nation. As president of KSSC I am immensely proud of our members. Since the KSSCS peciality runs concurrently with such a large all-breed cluster, exhibitors can compete in six shows over four days with two Sheltie Specialty Shows. Some Shelties have finished a championship during this long weekend.

Every year, KSSC breed judges compliment the fine quality of Sheltie entries that our show draws. Many exhibitors often tell us how they love our show, even sometimes the ones who didn’t win. LOL

Our Show Chair (Dianne O’Regan) completes a well-organized show; and our Trophy Chair (Mary Jane O’Regan) arranges an amazing array of coveted, beautiful trophies. Club members generously donate the trophies.

We are grateful to be a part of this Kentuckiana Cluster of Dog Shows where exhibitors can compete not only for titles in conformation, but also in agility, rally, obedience, dock diving, and barn hunt. We hope you will consider joining us for a future show.

Special 4-H Education Activity

Kentuckiana Shetland Sheepdog Club dogs helped to teach 4-H’ers about Shelties. Teenage 4-H members participated in a judging seminar at the Kentuckiana Cluster Dog Show. They learned the AKC standard of various dog breeds, then each 4-H member judged five breeds. Each participants’s score was compared to a licensed AKC judge score for the dogs.

Four KSSC member bred Shelties, were shown to the 4-H’ers. The dogs were: Sookie and Reis, bred by Barbara Boylan (Krown Shelties) and owned by Jill and Tom Hubbard; Lazer, bred by Debbie Basham (Astro Shelties) and owned by Jen McMakin; Misty, co-bred and owned by Jen McMakin (Bridgeway Above Shelties) and co-bred by Cindy Bays (Playland Shelties).

Jill took Reis into the ring, while Tom took Sookie. Club member Jane McCabe led Lazer to his AKC judge 1st Placement. And ring experienced club member Kerry Begley showed Misty beautifully.

These 4-H’ers were very smart and clever. They studied very hard and showed great interest. One young man was eager to learn the colors of Shelties. When told that Lazer was a bi-black, he then pointed to a sable and asked, “Is that one a bi-brown?” Wasn’t that a clever guess?

The 4-H young people learned a lot thanks to our KSSC bred Shelties. Part of KSSC’s mission is to educate the community about our wonderful breed – this activity was a fun way to accomplish that goal.
