Kentuckiana Shetland Sheepdog Club

Breeders

Some KSSC members are involved in breeding. We feature them here along with link to ASSA and AKA breeder Locator.  All KSSC club members agree to the principles of the Code of Ethics of: The American Shetland Sheepdog Association, The Kentuckiana Shetland Sheepdog Club, and The American Kennel Club.  This means that club members who breed will follow AKC’s guidelines to promote canine health(including testing), socialization, training, and responsible dog ownership.

About My Kennel:

I am a small hobby breeder.  I don’t breed frequently and generally try to have homes lined before the litter arrives. My breeding focus in on performance and temperament..  We try for sound puppies (complying with all testing guidelines) with attention to bone which is a consideration for competing in agility and other performance sports. As to temperament, my pups are outgoing, sweet, good with kids, people and other animals. All litters are socialized from the earliest days with other people, dogs, cats,  my grandkids and my bird.

Astro Shelties breeds both AOAC (Any Other Allowed Color) and Sable Shelties. I have bred and trained many performance titled Shelties, including my MACH3 Prince Kovu Von Baron RN MXG MJC MXP MJP XF, pictured above who is now 17 years old. I now have his offspring along with those of KJ’s Renegade On the Loose (Ringo). I began raising, breeding, and training Rottweilers and Cocker Spaniels, but Shetland Sheepdogs have won my heart for now and for the years to come.

About My Kennel:

Bridgeway Above is an AKC Breeder of Merit and a proud member of ASSA. As a hobby breeder, Bridgeway Above only breeds one litter about every two or three years. I breed Shelties to give back to the breed that I love. All of my dogs are tested to prove that each is worthy of improving the quality of the breed. I choose breeding pairs for what I love to participate in  – conformation and performance; combined with what type of dog I want to live with and LOVE. Therefore, the qualities of the breed standard are of major importance to me, especially structure, temperament, and movement. My dogs have reasonably good health for a long life.

I began with Shetland Sheepdogs in 2000 with what I was told was a Sheltie mix. She turned out to be a wonderful Icelandic Sheepdog. Then, in 2003, my first pure bred Sheltie puppy and I began obedience. Both dogswere near perfect! All my dog friends advised me to join the local Sheltie club (KSSC), which I did.

Two years later I found myself coming home from the ASSA Sheltie National with my first stud dog, Am/Can Champion Playland Rydin In Time. (I had asked the breeder, Cindy Bays of Playland Shelties in Buckhorn Lake, Canada,  for a girl puppy. Do you think she knew I was a sucker?) He was beautiful, a sweetheart, and I was IN LOVE! Bridgeway Above was a reality.  I remain forever grateful to Cindy who patiently taught me so much. If you are interested, I’ll be glad to tell you many more stories about Bridgeway dogs, those who became champions and those who are pet companions – all who are loved and treasured.

Perhaps you will become part of the Bridgeway Above extended family.
